I was ready to give a definitive answer to this. But I ran into a eye-opening story here in northern California. I is about the lessor known seaport of Eureka and Humboldt County.
Redundant Broadband is coming to smaller US cities.
Is DSL or Cable best? Neither. With better digital data reliability more investors will put money into the smaller cites. Read this story below to get the idea.

Humboldt County is less vulnerable to broadband Internet blackouts thanks to a new redundant fiber optic cable that runs along the Highway 36 corridor in Humboldt and Trinity counties. …
Humboldt County is somewhat isolated from the rest of northern California. The new fiver option system is to improve the business environment for the area. Clink on the link above for the full story. What this means is that now move Californians will be incited to leave the major metropolitan areas and move out to areas that offer something different. In other words, Internet accessibility and ATM reliability are becoming almost as important as highways for urban development.
Perhaps this will be a major trend in the months and years ahead, yet DSL is not going to die. But with higher speeds and better service, DSL is becoming dated. Which may translate in to low DSL prices for basic DSL service. But is price is not the disuse, go with anything else. Broadband is moving ahead.
